Conference of Physician Assistants is “Excellent” PDF Print

Excellent. Superb. Inspiring. Those were just some of the adjectives used to describe the spring conference of the Association of Family Practice Physician Assistants, held from March 12 – 14 in Orlando, Florida.

“I was really impressed with the turnout,” said Wendy Macey, PA-C, MPAS. Macey is the vice president of AFPPA. “We’re renowned for our educational programs, so I was especially pleased at the quality of instructors we had this year.”

Instructors were physician assistants in different specialties from across the United States. Ben Taylor, PhD, PA-C, was just one of those instructors. “I always enjoy opportunities to lecture,” he stated. Taylor is the immediate past president of the Georgia Association of Physician Assistants, and is employed at the Medical College of Georgia’s Emergency Department. “My session focused on staph infections. As always, the AFPPA attendees were ready and eager to learn, which makes my job a lot easier!”

“What physician assistants want is education in their field,” Blaine P. Carmichael, MPAS, PA-C, explained. Carmichael helped found the association and is currently a director at large for AFPPA. “We try to provide the most options for our members, including several hands-on sessions for a truly well-rounded education.”

“I thought it was excellent,” said Megan Olish-Terry, PA-C, MSPA, of AFPPA’s educational programs. Olish-Terry of West Virginia was an attendee at this year’s convention. “I learned skills that I can put to use right away.”

All education courses were approved for AAPA Category 1 Continuing Medical Education credits. “These courses are also available for credit to our nurse practitioner members,” Macey explained.

The Association of Family Practice Physician Assistants fosters the educational and professional interests of PAs by promoting academic and clinical excellence. AFPPA is committed to developing a strong field of family practice PAs by providing ample opportunities to receive continuing medical education credits, challenging PA students to connect with experienced PAs in a mentorship program, and immediately disseminating pertinent information to members via publications and its Web site.
